AN EXCERPT FROM THE UGLY DUCKLING

At this point, Margaret has assigned all the roles and the story is being told by the theatre crew.  Ozzie the Stage Manager has become Roy the Rooster, and Margaret has become Mamma Duck.  Both characters are now examining the pre-hatched eggs.

OZZIE

         (as Roy)

Bella!  How beautiful you look today!

MARGARET: Oh, knock it off, Roy!  I've been sitting on these eggs for days now and I can't get 'em to hatch no matter how hard I try!

OZZIE: Well, you just be patient, Bella!  Everything will come in due time!

         (looks at eggs)

Say!  You're gonna have quite a coopful of pretty ducklings, if these eggs are any indication.  Just look how round and tiny and smooth and lovely these...

         (acknowledges Jason)

Wait a minute!  What happened here?

MARGARET: Yes, I was wondering about that one myself.  Seems a bit...out of the ordinary, wouldn't you say?

OZZIE: Seems a bit...out of this world, is what I would say.  Why, that's the biggest duck egg I've ever seen in my life!

MARGARET: If it IS a duck egg!

OZZIE: You think, maybe...

MARGARET: It has all the signs.  I'm quite worried.

OZZIE: You mean...

MARGARET: Yes!  It might be...

BOTH: A turkey egg!!!

OZZIE: Boy, I hope you're wrong.  Last thing this little group is gonna need is a big ugly turkey taggin' along after them!

MARGARET: Well, we'll find out as soon as it's hatched.

OZZIE: Oh!  You mean the old 'throw him in the pond, see if he floats' test!

MARGARET: The Splash Test, yes.  It's very reliable.  Turkeys do not float!

OZZIE: Good luck, Bella!
